The power of meaningful conversations: about hope and race unity

Change happens when people are able to talk among themselves about subjects that matter. Over the past few weeks, the soul.com community has organized numerous spaces for meaningful conversations to take place, especially among youth.

In the past 6 weeks, over 1,000 people have participated in these conversations. People residing in El Salvador, Honduras, Chile, Peru, US, The Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Vietnam and New Zealand. During the first weeks, the topic of conversation was about hope in times of the corona pandemic, followed by the theme of racism in our own surroundings and what we can do about it. Some reflections from participants:

“…a truly inspiring conversation. For me, it is the first time that I have entered into a relationship or conversation of this type and it was a great experience”

“super good, excellent, I think it was a moment where we could get away from our activities and have a super interaction with new people”

“…it was nice to meet so many young people with dreams, working and wanting to do more to be better and help others”

“encourage young people, this is an opportunity and remember the time of miracles is not over, and we can have peace in the midst of the storm”

“I found it a very interesting conversation. We learnt different opinions and points of view. It is rewarding to relate to others. Very nice experience.”

“I liked being able to meet people who share their ideas of what we hope for the future, Thank you for the opportunity to acquire new knowledge and be able to share it with the people around us, I really enjoyed it very much.”

There is power in meaningful conversations. They elevate the spirit of the participants, challenge their assumptions, reorientate their perspectives, raise their awareness and focus their energies towards positive action. Meaningful conversations lead to meaningful action: changing the culture one small step at a time.

a place of trust
Meaningful conversations require an environment of trust — a place where people feel safe and accepted and can be honest. It is a space of learning together and encouraging each other to adopt new ways of thinking and acting.

The facilitators of these meaningful conversations have been trained in the Soul-driven leadership programme and are learning how to create such an environment of trust.

Organisations, companies, and educational institutions that aspire to become more purposeful, united, and inclusive can learn how to have meaningful conversations among staff members.
